About our work in Alexandria
Three different Alexandrias, three different rulebooks. We work all three.
An Alexandria address can mean three very different projects. In Old Town and Parker-Gray, replacing windows and doors takes a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Board of Architectural Review first. That submission is part of our job, not your homework. We spec ProVia, MI, or Andersen units with the profiles the board expects, prepare the paperwork, and custom-measure every opening. The new windows seal tight and still look like they belong on the block.
Del Ray and Rosemont are a different craft: 1920s clapboard repaired in kind, shutters rehung square, paint-grade trim where a wrap would flatten the detail. And on the West End, plenty of Alexandria addresses sit in Fairfax County, so the approval is an HOA package and a county permit instead. We confirm which Alexandria you’re in at the first visit, then run the right approvals ourselves. You pick the look. We handle the paperwork.

Common exterior projects in Alexandria
What we see on Alexandria homes
Alexandria’s housing runs from eighteenth-century brick to 2000s townhomes, so the right project depends on the block. Here’s what we install most often, and what each one does for the house.
BAR-compliant window and door work
Historic-district windows and doors have to satisfy the review board and still perform. We spec ProVia, MI, or Andersen units with the right profiles and muntin patterns, custom-measured to century-old openings. Approval paperwork included. See Windows.
1920s clapboard, shutters, and trim
Del Ray and Rosemont are full of 1920s painted wood worth keeping. We repair clapboard in kind, rehang real shutters square, and cut new trim to the original profiles. Fit and finish are the whole job here. See Trim.
West End HOA siding and roofing
Kingstowne, Franconia, and Rose Hill run on approved HOA palettes. We install James Hardie or insulated vinyl siding and GAF, CertainTeed, or Owens Corning roofs, color-matched to what your association allows. The submittal package is our paperwork, not yours. See Siding.
Small-lot access and staging
Old Town blocks and Del Ray streets have no room for a dumpster beside a material drop. So we plan it in advance: staged deliveries, alley access mapped, haul-away scheduled. It’s in the estimate before we start, and your street stays passable. See Roofing.

Common questions
Questions about exterior work in Alexandria
Is Virginia Exteriors licensed to work in Virginia?
Yes. We carry full liability and workers’ compensation insurance on every job, and our Virginia contractor license number is on every estimate we send โ you can verify it on the DPOR website in about 30 seconds.
How long does a typical project take?
Most window replacements finish in a single day. Full-house siding is typically two to four days depending on the scope. Roofing runs one to two days for a standard colonial. We give you a schedule before we start and tell you exactly which days the crew will be on-site.
Do you handle HOA approval paperwork?
Yes. We submit material and color specs to your HOA on your behalf and handle follow-up from the review board. We know what most Northern Virginia associations want to see โ product cut sheets, color samples, installation specs โ and we price the submittal into every job. We make sure what we install will pass review before we ever order materials.
What warranty comes with the work?
Every product carries the manufacturer’s warranty โ lifetime limited on most windows and siding, 25 to 50 years on roofing. We add a written workmanship warranty on top of that. If something fails because of how it was installed, we fix it. Warranty service is handled by the same crew that did the work, not handed off to a call center.
Is my Alexandria address actually in the City of Alexandria?
Often it is not. Kingstowne, Franconia, Rose Hill, and much of 22310, 22312, and 22315 use an Alexandria mailing address but sit in Fairfax County. This is not a technicality. The city’s Board of Architectural Review has no authority over a Fairfax County house, and your HOA has none over a house in Old Town. We confirm which applies before specifying anything.
Do I need BAR approval to replace my windows in Old Town?
If your home is in the Old and Historic Alexandria District or Parker-Gray and the windows are visible from a public way, yes, and the Certificate of Appropriateness has to be in hand before the building permit application can be filed. The same goes for exterior doors and siding. We prepare the submission and specify units that will actually clear review.
Which Alexandria neighborhoods do you work in?
Old Town, Del Ray, Rosemont, Beverley Hills, Seminary Hill, Landmark, Cameron Station, and the West End out through Kingstowne and Franconia. If you have an Alexandria address, ask. We cover both the city and the Fairfax County side of the line.
