About our work in Arlington

Built for Arlington’s brick colonials

Most of our Arlington work is pre-war brick: colonials, Cape Cods, and bungalows with their original openings. That is specialist work, and it is the kind we like best. We custom-measure every window to its masonry opening and order ProVia, MI, or Andersen units built to fit. The result is a tighter house that still looks like it belongs on the street.

Tight lots are part of the plan, not a surprise. We stage the material drop, place the dumpster, and protect the yard before the first ladder goes up. That is how a job runs clean on a narrow Arlington street.

Common exterior projects in Arlington

What we see on Arlington homes

Pre-war brick asks for a different kind of install. Here’s what we put on Arlington homes most often, and what each one does for the house.

Asbestos-cement siding, handled right

Plenty of 1940s and 1950s Arlington homes still wear their original asbestos-cement shingle, and removing it is regulated work. We know it on sight, scope it at the estimate, and build the handling into your written price. Then we install James Hardie fiber cement or insulated vinyl, color-matched and trimmed. See Siding.

Custom windows for masonry openings

Brick openings take custom-measured units, not stock sizes. We measure each opening, order the window to fit it, and set it square, insulated, and properly flashed. Double hung, casement, bay, or bow, installed in a day on most homes. See Windows.

Seamless gutters, routed for tight lots

Small roofs and close neighbors leave no room for guesswork. We install seamless 5-inch and 6-inch systems, color-matched to your trim. Downspouts get routed to the street, not the lot line. See Gutters.

Porch and dormer woodwork

Arlington’s porch posts, dormer cheeks, and rake boards carry detail worth keeping. We rebuild trim to match the original profile, then wrap fascia and soffit in PVC-coated aluminum. Wrap your wood once. Stop painting forever. See Trim.

Why local matters

We come in from Sterling, and we come in prepared.

Arlington sits inside the Beltway, at the far end of our daily range, and we plan for it. The project manager who measures your home is the one who answers the phone. The crew that starts your job finishes it. The site walk settles parking, staging, and material drops before day one. In Maywood and Arlington’s other local historic districts, we prepare the Certificate of Appropriateness as part of the job. And warranty service stays in-house.

Common questions

Questions about exterior work in Arlington

Is Virginia Exteriors licensed to work in Virginia?

Yes. We carry full liability and workers’ compensation insurance on every job, and our Virginia contractor license number is on every estimate we send โ€” you can verify it on the DPOR website in about 30 seconds.

How long does a typical project take?

Most window replacements finish in a single day. Full-house siding is typically two to four days depending on the scope. Roofing runs one to two days for a standard colonial. We give you a schedule before we start and tell you exactly which days the crew will be on-site.

Do you handle HOA approval paperwork?

Yes. We submit material and color specs to your HOA on your behalf and handle follow-up from the review board. We know what most Northern Virginia associations want to see โ€” product cut sheets, color samples, installation specs โ€” and we price the submittal into every job. We make sure what we install will pass review before we ever order materials.

What warranty comes with the work?

Every product carries the manufacturer’s warranty โ€” lifetime limited on most windows and siding, 25 to 50 years on roofing. We add a written workmanship warranty on top of that. If something fails because of how it was installed, we fix it. Warranty service is handled by the same crew that did the work, not handed off to a call center.

Does Arlington require design review for exterior work?

For most homes, no. It is a standard county permit. Arlington has a handful of local historic districts, Maywood being the largest at roughly 300 buildings. Exterior changes there need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the county’s Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board. We prepare that submittal as part of the job and spec products that pass review. Many approvals now happen at staff level, so it moves faster than its reputation suggests.

My house may have asbestos siding. What happens then?

We flag it at the estimate, not on demolition day. Asbestos-cement shingle was standard on many 1940s and 1950s Arlington homes, and removing it is regulated work. We scope it honestly, price it in writing up front, and handle it right. Then the new siding goes on: James Hardie fiber cement or insulated vinyl, color-matched and trimmed.

Where will the crew park and put the dumpster?

We settle that at the site walk, before we order material. On narrow Arlington streets that can mean a smaller dumpster, staged deliveries, or a right-of-way permit from the county. We arrange all of it in advance, so the job runs clean and the street stays friendly.
